FAIRFIELD — Four people were charged and drugs with a street value of about $40,000 were seized during a search Wednesday of a home on Crane Drive.
The search was launched by the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office at about 5:45 a.m. following a monthslong investigation by its criminal division into illegal drugs being sold by people at the home, Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster said. Waterville police helped in the search.
In total, police seized more than 370 grams of fentanyl and crack cocaine, controlled pills, a large bottle of chloroform, $15,932 in suspected illegal drug sale proceeds, digital scales and illegal drug-related documents and related paraphernalia, Lancaster said via email.
Three people at the home were arrested and one was issued a summons, Lancaster said.
George Walker, 34, of New York, was arrested and charged with two counts of Class A aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, and violation of conditions of release, Class E. At the time of arrest, Walker was out on bail and had outstanding arrest warrants from Cumberland and Franklin counties. The Cumberland warrant is for two counts of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs and the Franklin warrant, for two counts of unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, with bail for each warrant set at $5,000, according to Lancaster. He said Walker’s bail has not yet been set; his initial court date is Aug. 6 in Somerset County Unified Criminal Court in Skowhegan.
Olguita Colon, 42, also of New York, and Margaret Visconti, 41, of Fairfield, were arrested and each was charged with two counts of Class A aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, Lancaster said. Bail has not yet been set for them. They also are scheduled to appear Aug. 6 in the same court. Lancaster said drug charges against all three are elevated due to the amount of drugs seized.
Meanwhile, Julia Maxim, 31, of Burnham, was issued a summons and charged with Class D unlawful possession of scheduled drugs.
“Additional charges may be forthcoming once the case has been reviewed by the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office,” Lancaster said.
Sheriff’s Office criminal division supervisor Carl Gottardi II, three criminal division detectives, four patrol deputies and five Waterville detectives took part in the search, Lancaster said.
He said over the past month, the sheriff’s office criminal division has seized suspected crack cocaine laced with fentanyl. Information obtained during recent drug investigations reveal that drug traffickers are reportedly lacing crack cocaine/cocaine with fentanyl and not advising the drug customers to increase the chances illegal drug users will become dependent on the drugs, increasing their illegal drug sales and profits. Lancaster said he wants to warn potential illegal drug users to be aware of the situation, as the chances of overdosing on the laced drugs is very likely and may prove to be deadly.
He said a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl is 2 milligrams (1,000 milligrams per gram). The amount of fentanyl seized Wednesday equals potentially 185,000 lethal doses.
He recommended those wanting to help stop drug addiction reach out to Betsy Richard at Somerset Public Health/Somerset County Sheriff’s Office to connect with harm reduction services or treatment and recovery support. She may be reached at 207-858-8466. Callers’ privacy will be respected, Lancaster said.
Crane Drive is located off U.S. Route 201, behind the Purple Cow House of Pancakes.
